5. Continuous Professional Improvement. The effective educator consistently:
a. Designs purposeful professional goals to strengthen the effectiveness of instruction based on students’ needs;
Strengthening my professional goals
As I began taking the lead of the classroom during my final internshipt, I created daily goals that focused on my teaching. The goals were used to strengthen my instruction and varied from reminding myself to introduce the standards and objectives of a lesson, set the expectations to my students, and focus on my pacing. The goals were also used consistently to form habit of being an effective instructor.
b. Examines and uses data-informed research to improve instruction and student achievement;
Improving instruction and achievement
During my final internship, I referred to articles to improve my teaching to support my students. The articles consisted of benefits of students self-assessing and how the teacher can use the data to support their learning needs. However, the article "Perceptions of Students and Teachers about the Forms and Student Self-Assessment Activities in the classroom During the Formative Assessment" by Shatri & Zabeli allowed me to gain comfort and knowledge in the collected data and how I can use it to help my students achieve.
Shatri, Z. G, Zabeli, N. (2018). Perceptions of Students and Teachers about the Forms and Student Self-Assessment Activities in the classroom During the Formative Assessment. Journal of Social Studies Education Research, 9(2), 28-46.
c. Uses a variety of data, independently, and in collaboration with colleagues, to evaluate learning outcomes, adjust planning and continuously improve the effectiveness of the lessons;
Using data to create small groups
I have been able to collect multiple formative and summative assessment data where I have been able to create small groups for extensive teacher support in lessons. While working with my CT, we have evaluated the collected data together to determine students level of understanding in multiple contents. An example where I have been able to show my role in this FEAP is creating a small group based on students writing needs after evaluating their self-assessment scores.
d. Collaborates with the home, school and larger communities to foster communication and to support student learning and continuous improvement
Collaborates with the home
I have created a welcome letter where I introduce myself to my students parents and guardians. I explain my role in their students classroom along with facts about myself.
I translate the letter in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese for my students' parents 'and guardians' most fluent language.
Collaborates with the School
I attended a McDonalds spirit night where the schools PTA staff fundraised money for the schools upcoming events. Along with proceeds going to the school, the teacher who has the most receipts from sprit night get the opportunity to win free kids meals for their homeroom class.
e. Engages in targeted professional growth opportunities and reflective practices;
Coding
I had the opportunity to participate in a coding training where developing teachers learned how to implement coding in their classroom in English Language Arts, Math, and Science. The training consisted of a step by step walk-through to show teachers how to implement the program to our students.
f. Implements knowledge and skills learned in professional development in the teaching and learning process.
Attending a PSLT Meeting
In my final internship classroom, there have been behavior challenges that distract the classroom from learning and also interrupts teaching. As strategies have been implemented, they have been successful for a small period of time. With the help of administration, we decided that holding a PSLT to discuss the behaviors we are seeing in the classroom and what strategies we can implement next would benefit the students learning and our instruction. As a group, we concluded that rearranging the furniture in the classroom and switching students to other homerooms would decrease the amount of negative behavior in the classroom.
During the meeting, I created a new seating chart that was implemented the day after.
